Love Gone Sour: A Vinegar Valentine's Dinner

  • MOFAD 62 Bayard Street Brooklyn, NY, 11222 United States (map)

Valentine's Day may be for lovers, but in the Victorian era, it was also for haters. During the 1840s, those who had not been struck by Cupid's arrow could express their curdled heart by sending a saucy and sometimes vulgar insult card anonymously by mail to a luckless recipient. These so-called 'vinegar valentines' are the inspiration for a 3-course vinegar dinner conceived and prepared by chef Harry Rosenblum, author of Vinegar Revival Cookbook and host of Feast Yr Ears on Heritage Radio Network.

In between courses, co-host Gastro Obscura will speak about the bitter history of vinegar valentines and chef Harry will discuss homemade  vinegar techniques, cooking with vinegar, and lead a vinegar tasting.

Tickets include a 3-course meal with sides plus a specialty vinegar cocktail crafted by Covert Cocktail Club and sour beer from Fifth Hammer Brewing Company. Personalized signed copies of Vinegar Revival Cookbook: Artisanal Recipes for Brightening Dishes and Drinks with Homemade Vinegars will be available for purchase.

MENU:

Pork with piquant sauce and puckered greens

Squash steamed with vinegar, as soft as a dream

Smashed potatoes, pickled fennel, carrot and beet

Chicken soup that’s sour and for something sweet

Cider vinegar pie topped with cardamom whipped cream

NEW YORK DISTILLING COMPANY

The earliest distilleries in Brooklyn date back to the 1700’s. During Prohibition there were over 50,000 illicit stills in New York City. Since Prohibition however, the ethereal perfumes of distillation have been largely absent…until now.

The New York Distilling Company builds on this dream by establishing one of the nation’s premiere craft distilleries

PHILOSOPHY FOODS

Philosophy Foods was founded in 2014 by specialty food industry veterans, David Yourd and Karrie Kimble.

The company was formed to help several small producers who created superior products, but did not have the means to effectively promote them nationally in the U.S. The name “Philosophy” was chosen for the founders’ devotion to a unique ideology of putting the producer’s success in the market first and foremost.

Never willing to compromise, Philosophy has curated a paramount food portfolio. The producers in this catalog have all been intensely vetted for sustainable production practices and achieving best in class status. As the industry grows, it is important to be able to distinguish between real ingredients versus the well marketed. You can trust in the integrity of any product offered by Philosophy Foods.
