The Arabesque Table: Tracing the History of Arab Cuisine with Reem Kassis and Julia Turshen

Join Reem Kassis, Palestinian food writer and author of the James Beard Award-nominated The Palestinian Table for a conversation with beloved cookbook author and podcast host Julia Turshen as they discuss Reem’s new cookbook, The Arabesque Table: Contemporary Recipes from the Arab World, an extensive and historically-traced canon of 130 recipes that crack open the world of Arabic cooking.

The product of extensive research, interviews, travel, and exploration, The Arabesque Table weaves knowledge, stories, and musings to bring the contemporary Arabic kitchen to life.

After the conversation, Reem will teach us how to make Fava Beans in Olive Oil with Garlic, Cilantro, and Lime, a deceptively delicious springtime dish from the book. Recipes will be emailed to ticket holders in advance for those who’d like to cook along at home.

REEM KASSIS

Reem Kassis is a Palestinian writer whose work focuses on the intersection of food with culture, history and politics. You can find some of her writings in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and the LA Times and various academic journals. She is the author of Phaidon's acclaimed cookbook The Palestinian Table, which won the Guild of Food Writers First Book award and a Gourmand World Cookbook award and was a James Beard Best International Cookbook award finalist and NPR Best Book. Her second book, The Arabesque Table is a one-of-a-kind collection of contemporary recipes tracing the rich history of Arab cuisine. She grew up in Jerusalem, then lived in the US, France, Germany, Jordan, and the UK. She now lives in Philadelphia.

JULIA TURSHEN

Julia Turshen is a bestselling cookbook author. Her latest book, Simply Julia, will be out in March 2021. She has written for multiple publications including The New York TimesThe Washington Post, Vogue, and more. She is the founder of Equity At The Table (EATT), an inclusive digital directory of women/non-binary individuals in food, and the host of the podcast Keep Calm and Cook On. She lives in the Hudson Valley with her wife and their dogs.
